What is the difference between a Certified Nutritional Consultant and a Registered Dietician? |
 |
Nutritional Consultants and Registered Dieticians differ in their level of education and, often, in their areas of focus and practice. The title of ‘Nutritionist’ is usually applied to a professional whose work focuses on improving people’s lives through nutrition and healthier living and can be used by dieticians and non-dieticians alike.
The term ‘Dietician’ is protected under provincial law and only qualified practitioners who have met specific education qualifications can use that title. Most active dieticians work in hospitals and health care institutions, and some set up private practices in community settings or become involved in research. Typically, Registered Dieticians offer counsel to patients and conduct classes for pregnant women, diabetics, heart and kidney patients, and other people with special dietary needs. |
On this site, the term Certified Nutritional Consultant is used to refer to graduates of the SAIT college Nutrition for Healthy Lifestyles certificate program (or equivalent). The 10-month program is taught and supervised by Registered Dieticians and involves intensive training in both theoretical and practical modules. The title of ‘Nutritionist’ is not protected in all provinces, so it is important to check into the background of any person claiming the title to ensure that she or he was educated through a qualified program and her or his credentials are legitimate.
A well-trained Certified Nutritional Consultant is qualified to work with you and help you make healthy choices when it comes to food preparation and the foods you eat. He or she can also work with you to ensure that any special dietary requirements due to allergies or illness are properly controlled and balanced in your diet. However, if you have an undiagnosed medical problem, you should consult your physician or a Registered Dietician directly.
